Delhi is going to host the 2010 Commonwealth Games and the city seems to be slowly getting into the mood for the same.Indian cities seldom get a chance to host such prestigious international sporting events and last such event of this magnitude was way back in 1982 when Asian Games were held in Delhi. But we must way the pros and cons of such a decision.Of course, entire city would get a facelift, new bridges and links are being constructed, sewers are being desilted, streetlights are being re-laid,newer technologies to manage traffic are being introduced. Moreover, attention of most of the world wouldbe focussed on Delhi during those days, tourism would get a filip, etc, etc.Plus sports can get a leg-up in our lazy country where children spend more time on video-games than on playgrounds. On the flip side,be prepared to see massive traffic jams during that period, economy is going to be strained as games budget has already overshot many times, terrorists may be looking for such an oppurtunity to bring spotlight on themselves by targetting such a major international event, meaning more headache for security agencies. All in all,i feel it will be a challenge for India to prove to the world that it is maturing as a great, modern nation who has the confidence to host other more prestigious events like Olympics by proving itself this time.Best of luck,Delhi. | | Sponsored Links |
